Charlie Askew could be sing-off bound

This is an Update to this post:
From Idol Forums:

Someone in Idol Maniac's site's chatroom said the source called in.

It's Charlie vs. Aubrey.

Adriana is home in Alaska.
Breanna is home in Louisiana.
Zoanette is home in Oklahoma?
Elijah is home in California.
Vincent is home in Texas.
Cortez is home in Texas.
Nick is roadtripping in California.
----------------------------------------------

The following was posted at Idol forums and could support the article below:

For the guys: Vincent is out. He's in Texas.
Cortez and Elijah are still giving off every indication that they're out.
Nick wrote "You and me both!" to a fan hoping he's the wildcard for the Idol tour. BUT he also wrote a "Miss you guys!" to Peisha McPhee, who he should already be working with for his sing off.
No indication yet that he's left LA.

If it's not Nick, that only leaves Charlie.

Charlie Askew could be sing-off bound

From The Examiner
MARCH 8, 2013

The "American Idol" 2013 top 20 results show aired March 7 on ABC, and featured a string of victory songs by the 10 aspiring singers who survived the season's first viewer vote. Not among the finalists was teen Charlie Askew, whose March 6 rendition of Genesis' "Mama" drew harsh criticism from the judges that prompted a near emotional meltdown. Despite his elimination, there's still a chance that Askew could earn a spot in the "American Idol Live!" tour.

According to show host Ryan Seacrest, the sixth place guy and girl will face off March 13 for an eleventh berth on the tour, allowing him or her to perform alongside top 10 stars in the making Angie Miller, Burnell Taylor, Candice Glover and the rest of the pack.

Although the two contestants' names have yet to be released, there's a good chance that Askew is the sixth place guy. His very public post-performance confession that he's not really the "happy, buoyant" person he seems to be struck a chord with viewers, many of whom rushed to Twitter in his defense.

Particularly enraged by the judges' harsh words and bemused response to Askew's performance was country star John Rich, who wrote "Hard critique is one thing, belittling someone in public is another. Didn't like it AT ALL."

Also frustrated was The Washington Post's Suzi Parker, who opined March 8 that "AI" should feature more contestants like Askew, who she predicted would've driven ratings up for the network and appealed to teenage girls.

For his part, Askew has remained silent following his elimination. But even show host Ryan Seacrest spoke up on his behalf following the results show, telling Access Hollywood that Askew impressed him by speaking publicly about a sensitive topic. "

American Idol" 2013 continues March 13 with performances by the top 10.

  1. Eh, I'm not holding my breath. It'd be nice to hear him sing one more time but I think they should just leave him alone now. He was happy to be cut and I think they should just let him be.

  2. True, but like you I just want one more performance. You know? I don't want people to remember him crying, but happy and singing a great song. Of course there is always the finale where they group 10 men and 10 women to do cheesy group numbers. Ha, I can see Charlie having a blast with that. :D

    1. Are the Top 20 included in the finale though? I thought it was the Top 12...

And yeah I agree, I want people to remember him as the spunky Gotye/Nature Boy Charlie everybody fell in love with, not the angry GRRR Charlie. XD It would be such a tease though if they ended up choosing the girl wildcard. His emotions are very fragile and that would just be sick and mean of them to lead him on like that.

    2. Hi Snu Pee...have you heard anything else on if charlie might be singing one more time for the sing off? I have plans and need to cancel if Charlie is singing tonight..I'm only watching Idol if Charlie is on it. I'm having a hard time finding anything on this on spoiler pages or anywhere online. I pulled up some info that people think it is Nick..but i hope it is Charlie. I want to see him have a good performance (fingers crossed). I really think he is a great singer and as a mom with an aspergers kid, I know it has to be tough for him. Thx!

  3. No, not all the top 20, usually they had at least 6 or 7 boys and girls do the finale shows. Not sure how they will do it this year. I know, I feel bad for the 6h person that is told they are not in-again. Ok, i'm about to post an update to this post!

  4. Ugh Aubrey seriously? Hahhaahhahahah there is NO way that boring fodder will get a spot on the tour over Charlie XD I'm so confused about how this whole thing works though, the winner gets a spot on the tour but they don't get to actually compete? How the hell does that work? Well if he ends up getting the spot it'll be nice for him to be out on tour with everyone else without having to go through the competition (if that is actually how it works) but I really wish they'd just leave him alone. But I'll be happy to hear him sing for us one more time and get a chance to redeem himself. I just hope he doesn't get overwhelmed again or anything.

  5. I don't think he'll be overwhelmed because this is a chance to just jam his music with no one critiquing him. The tour is so much fun for every single one of them. It will give him time to prepare well before this and he will definitely be in the finale. I really hope these sources are right. I just miss my Charlie !!

    1. But in a way he IS being critiqued because the public votes (I believe) on who gets the wildcard. That being said, I'm pretty sure Charlie has a way bigger fanbase than Aubrey. Perhaps that's why he hasn't returned to his personal Facebook, Twitter, or tumblr, because he isn't allowed to if he's still on the show.

  6. I think the show will take this opportunity to treat him with more respect because of the uproar they received concerning Charlie's critiques. It was all over the place, media/twitter/mails, etc. So, I think if anything he will be treated fairly. Nikki has tweeted she misses Charlie. So hopefully she will tone down her crazy remarks.

  7. This is an interesting comment from mjs blog:

"On the subject of this mysterious 11th person for the tour...does anyone else think this is a ploy because one of the 2 in the next highest voting is someone they think will land a record deal? Like Idol producers want to keep their claws on someone and have dibs on them, so made up this thing about adding someone into the tour? I think they already know who they are going to pick, and that is the reason for doing it!"

  8. I really find it hard to believe that Charlie "narrowly missed" making the Top 10... I believe he actually made it initially but they are using him as the Wildcard to create suspense. Everyone knows how much fun Charlie would be on the tour and they know he'd draw way more ticket sales than boring/generic Aubrey. The show has lost tons of viewers since his elimination. They need him more than he needs them, to be honest. I just hope that if he gets the spot that he doesn't have any more emotional issues, I'd rather him not be on the show if that's what makes him happy than have him be on the show but be miserable.

  9. Right, I mean he was at the top of dialidol, by no means its absolutely accurate but his score was probably higher than some of the guys and girls that made it. Then we have report after report with the same wording announcing Charlie's meltdown. He barely cried, ok? Seems more like publicists were fed exactly what to report. Yup this could just be drama buildup but i wonder if they will make it a wildcard or just leave it as a tour spot. If he kicks ass then I can see Idol saying that he is actually the wildcard. Which makes me wonder whether he has to sing a song of his own or sing songs like the other idols will have to do...American Idol past contestants songs. I hope the stylists help him out as well as the vocal coaches. Can't wait to find out for sure though.

    1. The fact that he's up against Aubrey also tells they pretty much are making it as easy as possible for him to get through, rather than say if it were Adriana or Breanna, who seem to be more popular than Aubrey. It's pretty clear they want him on the tour because, like I said, he will draw in sales. It wouldn't be nearly as easy say if Curtis was actually the one who did not get through (and I suspect it probably was him because many people hate his personality). It also could have been Paul that was the potential wildcard because he hasn't had any knockout performances but it would be hard to convince people to vote for him because of that (not to mention that Kree is dominating the country vote) If it's true that the wildcard simply gets a spot on the tour but will not compete, I can see why the producers would decide to pick Charlie for this spot because clearly he isn't happy being on the show, but he would be a great asset to the tour, essentially it's a clever way of including him without making him be part of the show. Perhaps (and a very small perhaps) the producers actually do believe in him and his talent and are being considerate of his feelings, so that was why they created this whole "wildcard" thing in the first place. JDA should totally be hired as a stylist, he'd be way better than Tommy Hilfiger!!!

  10. In most boards I've yet to see people being fans of Curtis. In polls he barely gets any votes. People are wondering who exactly is voting for him. Some think the top guys are either gay or efeminate enough not to get the fangirly vote. They are shipping the guys already! lol.

And that's why some are saying that Charlie did get the votes but were worried about his fragile state of mind. Sigh . I don't know Charlie personally but I think he should have been given the benefit of the doubt before throwing him out like some looney toon that just escaped a mental hospital. His eyes tells me when he's afflicted. When he is laughing and cracking jokes he gave every indication that he was in a good place so to make him be this person that can't handle criticism bothers me. I think he had an off night. Maybe he had an argument with someone. It's just not the Charlie we had seen for a while. So for people to label him as too fragile is not fair unless he himself tells us that he couldn't handle the criticism or stress of the competition.

Do you know why i think he wanted to cry? It's because he sang the song he most felt closer to the type of artist he wants to be. He dressed like he wanted to dress , like a classic 70s rocker. He felt that he was doing his own style. And when he was told it was all wrong for him, it got to him because he was being himself. He always said he couldn't be anything but himself. That oversize suit he wore before was bought last minute at a salvation store. It wasn't really his style, just something presentable for that day. So here goes Nicki thinking that's who he is and brought him to tears with every slashing word. Ugh. Ok i'm done venting. LOL.

I'll just wait patiently for Wednesday. I haven't heard any other rumors so as for now we still have Charley and Aubrey as the main contenders.

    1. Yes I agree that is why he cried- not because he couldn't handle the criticism (in fact Randy seemed to the be the only one who even commented on his vocals, while Keith made some attempt at the band idea and his range). It was because they criticized him for supposedly being disingenuous even though everything he does has always been himself. I could tell that was the very reason why he was so hurt. Especially since that's what he's all about is being himself. How did you find out about the suit? That's really interesting, hahaha no wonder why it was too big! I have the feeling though that this competition really isn't for him, he enjoys the people, but he doesn't seem to like how they portray him as this happy go-lucky kid. In his ext interview he said "I get to make my own image now" which says to me he isn't happy with how they portray him or that he doesn't like being associated with a pop machine like Idol. They don't get first choice on everything either, they give a list of 5 songs to the producers of what they would like to sing for that week and the producers end up picking one of those songs for them. Wardrobe isn't always exactly how they would like it either, they have to end up compromising on some thing and I can't see him being happy with that. He is his own artist and can't be told what to do or how to do it, so in a sense, I agree he's not some mentally unstable kid or anything, but I sadly think he really can't handle this competition.

  11. I understand that he is such a unique artist that it would be hard to compromise on clothes, song choices etc., but I don't think he would have a breakdown every time. I think he could handle this process. Hollywood rounds are filled with stressful moments and its a very long process. If he was able to get through that, i think he would be ok with professionals trying to guide him to where he could stand out better. The judges needed to judge his vocals, it's they who fail doing their jobs.

My Charlie is tough! Fear the Turtle!! LOL

Oh the suit info i got from the Washington post article whose author knows him:
"Preferring to go old school instead of picking a current Top 40 hit, Charlie sung the 1983 Genesis song, “Mama.” He wore a tank top, donned a ponytail and added an earring to his look, which seemed to cut against his earlier tailored suit from a thrift store and neon blue sneakers. But then the judges turned mean."

    1. Oh okay I saw that too.

And yeah, they hardly judged his vocals, especially Nicki who only focused on how he looked. I can understand her being upset at seeing a "different" Charlie though, I kind of felt the same way, but I can also accept that this is just a different side of him and he can't be a happy person all the time. I wonder what it was that he said made him angry? I can't even picture him being angry, to be honest.

  12. I had to give this guy props. He was commenting on a charlie bash article. I say right on and agree!

"What an Arrogant THREAD TITLE! Randy Jackson needs to learn something about MAMA( I am not talking about HIS OR YOURS ). Charlie did EXACTLY What that song demands- PARTICULARLY the anguished "SCREAM" at the end. For all of you "POP DIVA LOVIN/ ROCK MUSIC HATERS" out there- The song that Charlie performed IS ABOUT Phil Collin's PAINFUL ADDICTION TO PROSTITUTES AND HOW IT RAVAGED HIS LIFE AND MARRIAGES, etc. Etc. Anyone OLD (like ME?!- don't need Viagra yet at age 48) who has seen Genesis KNOWS that Phil Screams MORE THAN Charlie did ( HA HA, HA HA, OH...!!- for those in the KNOW). Does America really NEED another BALLAD SINGER with "runs" every 3 seconds? NO ROCK SINGER HAS WON AMERICAN IDOL( Daughtry finished 7th and then OUTSOLD 90% of AI "winners". In the words of Townsend & Daltry : LONG LIVE ROCK! I HOPE CHARLIE "sneaks into the top 10" SO you can KEEP ON HATING.... ;)"

    1. Haha glad to see someone sticking up for him. I understand not everyone is gong to like Charlie but I will never understand people actually wasting their time writing entire articles about how much they hate them. Although I disagree that a rock singer hasn't won Idol... David Cook, Kris Allen (to an extent), Lee DeWyze, and Phillip Phillips... they may not be "classic" rock and their music might have more of a pop flavoring, but they're all generally rock singers.... And Taylor Hicks is kind of a blend of rock, blues, and soul.

When I found out the song was about prostitutes I did think it was kind of a strange choice for an 18 year old boy lol

      Delete
  13. Oh i know, prostitutes Charlie? really? lol. But his tumblr is not full of kiddy stuff either.

I know why do people go on all the Charlie threads to put negative stuff? You like your bland singer, fine go to their threads and praise them to your heart's content. I don't get why they have to waste precious energy on bashing in a fan thread of all things.

I think the writer was talking about stuff that is close to hard rock. Banging heads and all. I like all flavors of rock personally.

  14. For some reason I thought someone else wrote that and he reblogged it. I could be wrong. That would be such a waste if it's him that wrote that. I just don't see how a Father would be totally ok with that. That's why i thought it was a reblog.

    1. Any particular post you're referring to? I was thinking of a few different ones actually that mention pot/drugs. Maybe he was just being a dumb teenager a couple years ago and thought it was "cool" or was trying to fit in or something but maybe he realized it was stupid and stopped doing it (at least I hope so).

  15. I was referring to the one where there is Marley i think and his son smoking titled "like father like son" I wasn't sure who wrote the stuff below. But anyways, i dont' want to judge without having true facts .

I havent heard much about today. Hopefully we'll see our Charlie today. :)

    1. http://zirconiumzeppelin.tumblr.com/post/31926844567/hot3s-like-father-like-son-this-is-really Oooh um... this is very awkward but... yes he wrote that. All the stuff about his parents divorcing and weed bringing him and his father back together... if you look below it says ZerconiumZeppelin added: (all the stuff) That was in September 2012 and he said "I still smoke to this day." I have to wonder if maybe since his Idol journey started maybe he stopped (as if the producers wouldn't catch him at some point with it) This breaks my heart honestly. I just have zero tolerance for drugs of any kind. Granted it's not the worst drug out there (it's probably better than cigarettes) but WHY. He is too good for it! It's no wonder why him and his dad are so close and I kind of had the feeling his parents might be divorced because his mother has a different last name as does his sister and they don't live together anymore (and I don't think it's only because he's on Idol). I'm sad. They say snooping is never a good idea because you're always bound to find something you don't like. :-(

    2. Andrea...I SO agree with you. I have also been a huge fan of Charlie just like you. But as a mom of 3 teenage boys (one who is very gifted with asbergers and much like Charlie)I have no tolerance for drugs. Makes me sad. I AGREE with everything you said. I still hope the best for Charlie and also think he is very gifted...but I would not want him to be an idol for my kids if he is a drug user. I think we think alike and just want the best for charlie! :(

    3. Thank you for agreeing with me! I posted the link on his Facebook fan page to show how upset I was and a couple people told me to take it down because it was an invasion of his privacy and that if the press find it they'll have a field day with it. Honestly, he's the one who decided to post this among many other drug-related posts and he has to deal with it if people comment about it. The fact that his father of all people actually condones and encourages him to smoke weed is appalling. I understand he's had several issues throughout his life but drugs is not the way to deal with it. The Charlie that I thought I knew would have turned to music. He pretty much duped us all into thinking he's a cute little dorky misfit boy but he doesn't appear to be totally innocent. And the fact that he has not even tweeted once since his elimination and doesn't communicate with his fans at all is another thing that angers me. I still like his music but I can't simply look at him the same way anymore. It hurts to know that the person you had this deep connection with and could relate to turns out to be someone completely different from the person you thought they were.

      Delete
  16. I understand that you feel hurt but he never went out there purposely to misguide people. No one is squeaky clean. Again, if he is still doing that, i'm not here to judge. I've long known never to put anyone on a pedestal. This blog was a way to support who I believe is so talented, a diamond in the rough. Can't expect much when his own father needs help himself. I will pray that Charlie finds true meaning to his life without the help of anything other than God, his amazing talent and love for himself.

Till then, I will still post anything that relates to his career and hope that his fans stand by his talent. He is young and has much to learn about life. Hopefully now that he is better known he'll have people to guide him that understand the industry and along the way find true friends that will support him.
